My Favorite: Hermit Thrush are a species that always catches me off guard in South Dakota! Perhaps that's why I don't have that many photos of them in state. They show up earlier in the spring than pretty much any other migrant songbird, often when there's still snow on the ground in early April. In the fall too, they tend to migrate through rather late, when the weather can be pretty cold.
My favorite photo below is one from in state, at Beaver Creek Nature Area in 2008. The easiest ID mark on a Hermit Thrush is that gorgeous rusty tail and lower back, and this photo does a great job of showing it.
