My Favorite: Chipping Sparrows are one of those birds that provide the background to a summer's day without you even knowing it. When I'm working in my yard, I often so often hear the rapid trilling of a singing Chipping Sparrow, that I don't give it any thought. A nice species to have around, and one I feel sorry for at times in our yard, given their tendency to host Brown-headed Cowbird chicks. Big chicks to raise for such a small sparrow! The big photo below shows a bird in summer breeding plumage, with that bold chestnut cap. Taken August 10th, 2014 at the Beaver Creek Nature Area near Brandon, South Dakota.
