Black Oystercatchers are strictly a bird of the West Coast, not a South Dakota species. I've been very fortunate on my few West Coast trips to have two different cooperative breeding pairs, one in Oregon (at Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach), and one at "Cliff House" in San Francisco. I've now had two great opportunities at Haystack Rock, and have seen them there boy times. Some of my favorite photos of any species are below. Click on the thumbnail for high-resolution photos.
