My Favorite: One of my favorite species, for the character they bring to a sometimes desolate winter birding landscape in South Dakota. They're always inquisitive, often scolding, and even better, often just PRESENT when few other birds are around. It's hard to visit a wooded area for long and not hear or see one. My favorite photo is from the fall of 2007, one of those beautiful fall days where the warm afternoon sunlight really is bringing out the fall colors. I caught this guy in a typical, inquisitive, White-breasted Nuthatch pose with those fall colors brilliantly shining through in the background.
