(archive photos of the week here)
It's been a busy last few weeks!! New job responsibilities, a LOT of hours lately, and not a lot of birding. I did manage to get out though to see a very popular Great Horned Owl that is nesting on a ledge on a vertical cliff face in Palisades State Park near Garretson, South Dakota. She's in a great spot to avoid human intervention, as you can only see her from across the river. It's a terrific way to spend an early spring morning, with the morning light lighting up the east-facing cliff face.
She's got three chicks that are growing by leaps and bounds, based on past photos I've seen over the last couple of weeks. This morning was pretty chill with her, although at one point she did start stripping off chunks of meat for her chicks, from part of a left over bird (you can see what's left in front of them, with the black fluffy feathers). This is the clan chilling out post-meal, hoping to get some shut eye for the day.
