Riflebirds were one of the species I knew about even before we thought of going to Australia. I knew them from seeing videos of their incredible mating displays, and was just hoping to catch a glimpse of one on our trip. I knew they were around the tropical northeastern part of Australia where we stayed for 8 days late in the trip, so thought I had a chance to see one.
I needn't have worried! Not only did I see PLENTY of Victoria's Riflebird, but they were the species that I ended up getting the most photographs of from the trip! During our stay at the Rainforest Canopy Treehouses near Tarzali, they were omnipresent. As soon as I started putting out banana slices for them at a feeder provided by the owner, they showed up. There were times when I saw 4 or 5 of them at once! And they weren't bashful either, often hanging out in very close proximity, and with some birds even taking fruit directly from my hand!
A gorgeous species, with obviously huge plumage differences between males and females. It was also very interesting to see just how the light impacted the look of the plumage. It was very dark under the rainforest canopy, so there were many times I had to use some flash to be able to get any photograph at all. The plumage really lights up when you add a touch of fill-flash, as seen in many of the photos below. Gorgeous bird, and so glad I got the opportunity to see them!
