One downside of visiting Australia during their winter...I knew there were some birds that weren't going to be in their brighter breeding plumage. That presumably meant Fairy-wrens. However, when visiting Muttonbird Island near Coffs Harbour, amidst all the drab Superb Fairy-wrens was this one, brilliantly blue male. It was later that I was told that some dominant males in an area may hold onto their breeding plumage for a long time into the winter. Note I also photographed a young bird or a moulting male (below) with touch of blue feathering.
