Pied Butcherbird Photos

Cracticus nigrogularis

When staying at the "Promised Land Retreat" near Bellingen (HIGHLY recommended), I'd get up at dawn and walk around the expansive grounds, getting some birding in while the family slept in. On that first foggy morning, I heard this gorgeous melodic song coming from the road in front of me. When I rounded the bend and looked around, all I saw was a Pied Butcherbird.  They look like they're part of the crow/raven family...surely that wasn't the one singing, right?

Wrong! Pied Butcherbirds have SUCH a wonderful song. The only place I really heard them singing like this was around Bellingen, but it certainly made for some wonderfully melodic mornings as I did my early morning birding.
