My Favorite: Unfortunately Acorn Woodpeckers aren't a species I get a chance to see all that often, given that their normal range is along the US Pacific Coast or parts of the Southwestern US. We do go on vacation to Tucson every 3 or 4 years, and I do enjoy watching resident Acorn Woodpeckers at Madera Canyon, south of Tucson. But my favorite encounter, and favorite photo, of an Acorn Woodpecker was at Point Reyes National Seashore in California. Acorn Woodpeckers are known for their massive caches of acorns and nuts, built in "larder" trees. This photo doesn't do justice to the massive larder this family of birds had, as this massive tree was just perforated with thousands of individual cache holes. Here, a lone Acorn Woodpecker checks in on his stores, evaluating whether he'll have enough for the winter.
