My Favorite: I have seen Red-necked Grebes in South Dakota, but they do not breed in my part of the state, and thus I've primarily seen winter-plumaged migrants rather than the glorious, breeding plumage birds. However, I've been fortunate in having several opportunities to visit Alaska, and in and around the Anchorage area, Red-necked Grebes are a relatively common sight, even within the city limits. They're also often relatively tame. That was certainly the case with the bird shown below, found on a small lake just outside of Anchorage. Early morning light, a fresh gorgeous breeding plumaged bird...I couldn't have asked for a better setup. From June 2006.
