American Wigeon Photos

Photography by Terry Sohl

My Favorite: American Wigeons are pretty common migrants through my part of the state. I see them every spring. But yet as I make this page, I realize I don't have any (good) photos of the species from within South Dakota! They are one of the more shy waterfowl species here. Interestingly though on a trip to Alaska, they were quite tame and foraging near the shoreline of a small lake near Anchorage, Alaska. This is a surprisingly common phenomena, with a species that's shy here acting much differently in other parts of the country. The photo below is probably my favorite as it shows both the male and female.
