My Favorite: 20 years! I started birding in the winter of 1999/2000. It wasn't until May of 2020 that I got my first really good photos of Blackburnian Warblers in South Dakota. First of all, they're a species that's pretty uncommon as a migrant here. most years, I don't see any. Secondly, they're generally up in the canopy, most often out of camera range. And finally, they're warblers! They're always moving! Serendipity struck on May 16th, 2020, however, with an incredible migration fallout. In 2 hours of walking around Beaver Creek Nature Area in far southeastern South Dakota, I saw 16 warbler species! That included 2 gorgeous Blackburnian Warblers, shown by pictures 5 through 10 below.
