My Favorite: A bird primarily found in the southeastern United States, White-eyed Vireos are but a rare visitor to South Dakota, with just a handful of recorded sightings. I was fortunate in finding an active, singing bird in Newton Hills State Park in the spring of 2019, and all the photos below are of that bird. He hung around the same area (indeed, near the same clump of bushes) for at least two weeks. Getting a photograph was a challenge, however, given the preference for staying hidden within the thicket! Fortunately I was able to get some clear photos, and particularly given the rarity of the species, this photo is not only my favorite White-eyed Vireo photo, but one of my favorite photos overall.
