My Favorite: One of the many species of small sandpipers that migrate through the state, their overall plumage doesn't distinguish clearly from some other species, but when they take flight the white rump is a giveaway. Unfortunately I don't have any good flight shots showing that identifying feature! I do like this photo though, for the soft, muted lighting, and the nice pose. This is a breeding plumage bird from May 2014, in Minnehaha County. They have a kiss of richer-colored feathering at this time of year, and as with all plumages, you can see the little orangish spot at the base of the bill that's another identifying feature of White-rumped Sandpipers.
