My Favorite: Ruddy Turnstones are a relative rarity in South Dakota, as most birds migrate along the coast. However, we do occasionally see them, particularly in spring migration. Always a treat to see them as they stand out from most of the other sandpipers and shorebirds that move through the state, with very bold patterns and coloring in their breeding plumage. My favorite photo of the species was taken in May 2014 at "Weisensee Slough" in western Minnehaha County, where 3 or 4 of them were foraging along the shorelines. Loved the raised foot, the little "prize" he'd just caught, and the wonderful look at their bold plumage.
