Belted Kingfisher Photos

Photography by Terry Sohl

My Favorite: Belted Kingfishers may be one of the spookiest birds in South Dakota, when "spooky" means they're easily flushed and are not very cooperative for a photograph. I have so few photos of the species, despite seeing them (usually from long distance!) many times over the years. What's funny is on a trip to southern Florida, Belted Kingfishers were not particularly shy. My favorite photo of the species is of a bird in flight from Dewey Gevik Nature Area west of Sioux Falls, on April 18th, 2018.
