My Favorite: California Gulls aren't a species I see all that often in South Dakota. They actually do breed here and are around the northeastern part of the state, and along the Missouri River, but the only place I really ever run across them in the state with any regularity is below Oahe Dam near Pierre. I REALLY don't expect to see them in winter, as they're a species that may breed in the interior of North America, but generally spends the winter along the Pacific Coast. My favorite photo of the species is thus one that came as a bit of a surprise, as I came across a lone California Gull near Pierre, South Dakota on January 2nd, 2021.
