White-winged Crossbill Photos

Photography by Terry Sohl

My Favorite: A species that to date, I've only seen in one location...Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They're known to be wanderers, a species that in winter might show up good numbers, or not show up at all. In southeastern South Dakota, it's definitely the latter, as there have only been a handful of winters that I remember them being reported around here. Mount Pleasant Cemetery has some very large, old spruce trees that often have a good crop of cones, and that's what's the attraction for Crossbills. Curiously, the only Crossbills I've seen there have been White-winged Crossbills, and I have seen them there during three different winters. These photos are all from February 2012.
