My Favorite: You wouldn't know it by all the photos below, but I simply haven't seen Purple Finches very often. I get House Finches at my feeders, but never have had a Purple Finch. They're around the area in winter, although they're unpredictable and not always present. Nearly all the photos below were taken during one very "finchy" winter in 2007/2008, when there were not only many Purple Finches around, but also more Pine Siskins than normal. My favorite is below, of a male foraging through the dry autumn leaves at the Big Sioux Recreation Area in November 2007.
