My Favorite: The less common of the
two nuthatches found in my part of the state, with White-breasted Nuthatches
must more prevalent. I've never had a Red-breasted Nuthatch at my feeders,
but I have often seen them in some of the state parks in the region. The
photos from Newton Hills State Park below are from three or four different
dates, but the photos themselves are all from the same tree!! There's a massive
eastern red cedar that always is full of berries in the fall, and that one tree
is where I've most often seen Red-breasted Nuthatches in South Dakota.
That includes the photo below, from October 10th, 2010 in Newton Hills State
Park.
