My Favorite: Who couldn't love Tanagers? All of them are so beautifully colored. We have two species commonly found in South Dakota, Scarlet Tanagers and Western Tanagers, as well as another that's a rarer visitor (Summer Tanager) but there are a whole host of other tanager species in the tropics. Hepatic Tanagers may not reach as far as South Dakota, but they do have a range in the southwestern US that goes as far as parts of Colorado. The only ones I've seen are when we visit Madera Canyon in Arizona on vacations, where I've been fortunate enough to see them multiple times, and to photograph them a couple of times. My favorite photos is the male below, from a visit in December of 2018.
