Happy New Year! And what a great way to start out the New Year, with some
great birds on the first weekend of the year! It seemed like every birder in the
14-state area was around Brookings right around New Year's, trying to see the
Short-eared Owls that have been seen in the area recently (as well as a Snowy
Owl). I made the trip right before New Year's and right after, and both times
was fortunate enough to see both species of owls.
It's the Short-eared
Owls that stole the show, however! They seem to appear out of nowhere about 45
minutes before sunset, as they start prowling the fields in this area, looking
for voles. This was one from January 2nd, RIGHT before he screamed downward and
caught a big fat vole for supper.
