Bobolink

Photo of the Week (May 31st, 2020)

(archive photos of the week here)

Bobolinks are a species I've rarely been able to get close to. Their incredible, gorgeous, tinkly calls are something you certainly can't miss!  Driving around estern South Dakota in the spring, if you pass a big grassy field, it's a sound that certainly grabs your attention. But despite seeing and hearing them quite a bit, they've been SO camera shy for me overall.  I was thrilled to get the photo below, just a few miles from home, in  May of 2020.  Wonderful late evening lighting that wasn't too harsh, which let me get detail in both the black and white plumage areas...always a challenge with a Bobolink.
