Prairie Rattlesnake

There's a prairie dog town on the Fort Pierre National Grasslands that is known for rattlesnakes in the fall.  On warm fall days after a chilly night, rattlesnakes will often come out and sun themselves.  I've always wanted to try to photograph them, and finally did it in October of 2011.   I found this guy, and two other big rattlesnakes, curled up at the top of a prairie dog burrow.   Photo taken with Canon 50D, 400 5.6L.
