South Dakota Birding"Hotspot"

Presho Area

Area #1 - Abandoned Schoolhouse

A photo of the abandoned schoolhouse on the corner of 242nd street and 304th avenue.  This photo pretty much typifies my usual birding trips to the Presho Area.  It's about a 3-hour drive from my home, so I leave about 3 hours before dawn.  Arriving at this schoolhouse south of Presho is my indication to start birding, as I know I've reached a true winter raptor "hostpot".

In truth, simply driving around the general area, you'll have great luck running into raptors. I specifically mention list the schoolhouse as a hotspot area because it seems every birding trip I make to the area, I get off to a great start by driving past the schoolhouse, and seeing a raptor sitting on the brick chimney.  I swear, every time, or so it seems!!  This is along the edge of an area that's obviously heavily used for pheasant and grouse hunting, but it's those gamebirds (many of which are captive raised and released specifically for hunting) that attract the vast numbers of raptors.

By the way, I think it's serendipity that the camera lens flare artifact that shows up on the schoolhouse appears to have two eyes and a beak, like a bird.  :-)
