From the Refuge's headquarters, there's a gravel road that winds north and east to the northeastern entrance. While eventually leading to the big, deeper, open water Little White River Pool, the road first winds through expanses of grassland and some scattered crops. The photo below is a typical view along the road, looking across broad areas of undisturbed grassland.
Another highlight on this road, however, is a large prairie dog town, found on the road to the north of the headquarters. It's a location where you're almost assured of finding Burrowing Owls during the summer. As with any prairie dog town in South Dakota, it's also often a great spot to look for other bird species.
