Parts of the auto route tour are lined with shrubs and small trees,
usually just a thin strip between the road and the water. I've heard
that they are thinking of removing the shrub and making it a more natural,
open habitat. I hope they don't. The mix of habitats at LaCreek
is what makes it so special to me. The shrubs along the road can be
outstanding for songbirds, particularly during migration, and there are
others that you'll find nesting in them.
I understand the
desire to keep the habitat "natural", but c'mon...LaCreek is already a
heavily managed mix of dikes and water control. Take away all of man's
influence, and LaCreek overall would be a very different place.
Leaving a few shrubby areas (but controlling further spread) doesn't seem
like a bad thing, particularly given the benefits for some bird species and
the rarity of shrubs and trees on the north edge of the Sandhills.
