The managed pools south of the park headquarters, along the auto route tour, can be absolutely fabulous for birding. Water levels vary, and thus so do the bird species depending upon those water levels and the time of year, but you'll almost always find some good birds. The photo below is a March view across one of the pools on the southwestern edge of the Refuge, on the western side of the auto route tour. Along with the ducks on the open water here and the Canada Geese on the ice, you see several of the park's most famous birds, the Trumpeter Swan.
