This is a little "island" area sticking out into Lake Yankton, but I think it deserves special mention because of the wetland habitats that are on much of the edges of the island. American Bitterns, Sora, Green Heron, and Virginia Rail are some of the marsh birds you can find here. The little inlet you see on the bottom of the image below is also a great place to look for waterfowl, especially since there's often open water here in the winter. The same holds for the edges of Lake Yankton, which often seem to have waterfowl-attracting open water in winter.
The photo below shows a chilly January morning on the edges of Lake Yankton, yet there's still open water around the edges. On this day, the open water at the far end of the photo attracted several hundred waterfowl, including Redheads, Common Mergansers, Common Goldeneye, Lesser Scaup, Canvasback, Mallards, and interestingly for winter, many American Coots. This photo shows the far southwestern corner of Lake Yankton, just off the top edge of the satellite image above.
