Along the north edge of the park is a paved trail that connects to a larger trail system in the Brookings area. It is bordered on both sides by trees. While most of the woodland and treed areas in Dakota Nature Park are deciduous trees, this stretch of trail is bordered by a thin row of relatively dense pine trees. Given the thick cover and different vegetation type, one can sometimes expect different bird species here. When I visited on this day, the trees in this area held Golden-crowned Kinglets, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and Brown Creeper, three species I didn't see elsewhere in the park.
