Dakota Nature Park, Brookings

Larson Nature Center

An overhead image from Google Earth of the area around the Larson Nature Center building. Larson Manufacturing in Brookings makes storm doors and related products. The Larsons provided funding for this wonderful Nature Center building that serves as the activity hub for Dakota Nature Park. It's 5,300 square feet of space devoted to displays, educational opportunities, and rental of outdoor equipment. From a birder's perspective, this is typically where you might start, parking in the parking lot just to the south of the Nature Center building. The building itself sits in an large open grassy area, which isn't by itself too interesting for birds. However, there are a number of feeders on the north side of the building (as well as a few at the entrance on the south side). There's comfortable seating inside no matter the weather for those who wish to see what might show up at the feeders. The view also looks out towards Middle Pond, while Island Pond is just to the east.  The wetland boardwalks are a very short walk to the west.
