South Dakota Birds and Birding

Bird and Nature Artwork by Terry Sohl

Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush

There's a bit of a story with this species.  This is a bird of the tropics, and until 2010, they had only ever been seen twice in the United States, both times in the extreme southern part of Texas.  In the summer of 2010, however, one VERY lost Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush was found in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  It was a 6-hour drive from where I live on the exact opposite side of the state, and I never made it there to see the bird.  Hence the drawing, and not a photo!!
