This photo of a Sandhill Crane was taken on August 8th, 2007 in Yellowstone National Park. Two adults and one colt about 3/4th of their size were atop this very dry grassy/sagebrush flat near Mammoth Hot Springs...not exactly a place I'd expect to see them! A pleasant surprise, and there were some wet meadows and beaver ponds nearby, places I assume where they had bred. Photo taken with Canon 20D, 400 5.6L.
