This photo of a group of Buff-breasted Sandpiper taking flight from a cut alfalfa field was taken on August 1st, 2008 in Kingsbury County, South Dakota. This photo doesn't even cover the entire flock taking flight, and there are 39 individuals just in the photo. Given the rest in this group taking flight, and given the other scattered single and paired birds in this field, there were at least 50 Buff-breasted Sandpipers present this day. Photo taken with Canon 40D, 400 5.6L.
