Rough-legged Hawk

Photo of the Week (November 26th, 2017)

(archive photos of the week here)

It's already looking like a banner year for many "winter" birds.  Winter finches like Common Redpoll, Pine Siskin, and Crossbills are being seen much more often than usual, Snowy Owls are being seen a lot, and the winter raptors such as Rough-legged Hawks are also being seen a lot. I can see many dozens of Rough-legged Hawks in one day, if I go to the central part of the state in winter, but they're not nearly as common around the far eastern edge of the state. This year, however, I've already seen several.  Here's a photo of one from last year, taken near Newton Hills State Park.
