Scissor-tailed Flycatcher

I NEVER have any luck chasing individual birds, those unusual birds that aren't often found in South Dakota.  The story usually goes...rare bird spotted...drive a long distance to see it...and it's not there, or not spotted.  So, when someone reported a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher hanging out on the outskirts of Brookings, I didn't give it much thought.  But then I had one free morning, and decided to give it a shot.  I'm glad I did.  I had no idea these were such beautiful birds, so colorful.  He hung out on a barbed wire fence, periodically dropping down to catch the rather sluggish grasshoppers and crickets in the grass below.  Taken in October 2008 near Brookings, South Dakota.
