So, I've been doing this for a little while, and I THINK I'm starting to know birds pretty well. But, as this experience taught me, there's always much more to learn! I was taking a hike on a very high sagebrush and grass plateau in Yellowstone National Park when I heard, and then saw 2 parent Sandhill Cranes, and a colt (young). What?!?!? Up here on a bone-dry plateau? What on earth!??! At least that's what was going through my mind at the time, as I'd always associated these guys with wet meadows and other wet areas. There were actually a couple of little beaver ponds nearby here, but after the birds calmed down a bit and I watched them, it started to make sense. They were chasing grasshoppers, and there certainly were plenty of them to go around! Smart birds! Not so smart photographer!!
As for the photo, I was very glad to capture both parent and colt, in mirrored poses of each other.
