Gila Woodpecker

As you may be able to tell, I really love birding in Arizona.  I just find it amazing at how full of life the Sonoran Desert is, including a lot of bird life.  This was a family trip in May of 2008, and we happened to catch the Saguaro Cacti in bloom.  A lot of birds feed on the flowers, nectar, and subsequent fruit of the Saguaro, including these guys.  I believe this guy was feeding on nectar, as he'd stick the entire top half of his body down a bloom in search of something.  Photo taken in May 2008 just outside of Tucson, Arizona.
