Ferruginous Hawk in Flight

One of the reasons the Fort Pierre National Grasslands can be a special place to visit in the dead of winter...the array of raptors that can often be found.  Near the top of the list for me are Ferruginous Hawks, drop-dead gorgeous birds that are typically easier for me to find there in winter than in summer.  On this cold but crystal clear day, I came across this bird perched on a wooden post.  He took off as I approached, giving the first shot below as he took off, and then curiously circled me for a bit, allowing me to get the second photo.

Photos taken on December 9th, 2005 on the Fort Pierre National Grasslands south of Pierre, South Dakota.
