Elf Owl at Dawn

This little guy was one of the greatest thrills I've had since I started doing birding and photography.  There's a gorgeous little bed and breakfast on the outskirts of Tucson, Arizona, that we've been at a couple of times now.  They have their own 40+ acres of Sonoran Desert habitat, which has got to be some of the "birdiest" desert habitat I've seen.  Right outside of the suite we stay at is a massive saguaro, that has periodically hosted nesting Elf Owls.

On this trip in the Spring of 2008, my 5 year old son and I heard Elf Owls occasionally at night.  One morning, I woke before dawn, and went and camped out at the base of another massive saguaro, seemingly where the nighttime calls were coming from.  Right after dawn, this little guy flew in towards the Saguaro, and landed smack dab in front of me in a bush, no more than 10 feet away!!  He then proceeded to stare at me for a long time, while I filled my memory card with Elf Owl shots.  He finally tired of me and flew up to a hole in the Saguaro and disappeared.  Great, great experience!!!   Photo taken on May 7th, 2008.
