Red-phase Eastern Screech Owl

One of those species that's probably a lot more common than people think, but you don't see them that often.  I'd seen them on occasion, but until this day, I'd never seen anything other than the gray color phase.  I was driving when I noticed a commotion of mixed birds.  I stopped, and this is what they were harassing...a gorgeous little red-color phase Eastern Screech Owl.  I've gone back to that area several times since, and every screech owl I've seen in the area has been a reddish color phase one.  Must be a little family group in this area.

Photo taken on June 11th, 2006 near Beaver Creek Nature area in Minnehaha County, South Dakota.
