Brown Pelican in Flight

This photo of a Brown Pelican coming in for a landing has been one of my favorites since I took it in February 2008 at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge on the coast of Alabama.   It has more special meaning to me now, given that Bon Secour is one of the places that is being hard hit by the Gulf oil spill.  On this day, it was storm in the morning, but clear by late morning.  It was a weekday, in February.  I walked the beach, and had it to myself, and had a truly wonderful day.  I wonder what that same beach looks like now.

Brown Pelican - Pelecanus occidentalis
