On a family vacation to Oregon in 2009, we had a few days at Cannon Beach. Great spot, and we certainly had a blast. One of the most fun things to do was walk on the beach to Haystack Rock in the mornings, during low tide. The tide pools were wonderful to explore at low tide, and there certainly wasn't any shortage of bird life around.
We were told there was a pair of Black Oystercatchers that nested on Haystack Rock every year, but they typically nested on the far side of the rock, away from the beach access area. This year was different though, as they chose a rock very close to the beach. I was thrilled when one of the pair flew down right in front of me, and proceeded to forage at low tide. Great to get this close to the species, but even better to get such a beautiful setting for the bird.
Photo taken on June 8th, 2009 with Canon 50D, 400 5.6L.
