Bald Eagle in Flight

The open water below the Missouri River dams in South Dakota are simply outstanding for viewing and photographing Bald Eagles in winter.  With ice covering most open water in the state, these areas are naturals for attracting these fish-loving birds.  There are times where I've seen as many as 8 Bald Eagles in a single cottonwood tree below Gavin's Point Dam, and the competition for fish often brings great interactions between the birds.  On this day, I was treated to extremely close views of this bird as he intermittently would swoop down from a cottonwood to the water's surface, and then fly back up to his perch to wait and try again.

Photo taken on January 1st, 2007 at Gavin's Point Dam near Yankton, South Dakota.
