American Kestrel - Male

THIS is why I often bring my camera equipment with me, even when running errands, or going back and forth between work.  Few birds have tormented me more in terms of trying to get a photograph, than American Kestrels.  They're pretty common here, especially during migration when it sometimes seems like you can find one on every telephone wire, but they nearly always flush when you get within 50 yards.  On this sunny winter day, I had just left my house when I came across this gorgeous male perched on a wooden fence post.  He didn't stay long, but long enough for me to capture several images, including my favorite shown here.

Photos taken on February 5th, 2006 at the Big Sioux Recreation Area near Brandon, South Dakota.
